What Is the Minimum Size System You Need to Charge an EV From Home or Business Solar?
The size of solar system required to charge an EV depends on how much you drive, how quickly you want to charge, and how much solar energy your property can produce during the day.
Most electric vehicles draw around 7–12 kWh per hour when using a Level 2 wall charger. To meaningfully offset that energy with solar, most homes require a minimum 6.6kW solar system, while 8–10kW systems provide more flexibility and better coverage, particularly for larger EV batteries or households with higher daytime energy use.
For businesses or sites charging multiple vehicles, system size increases quickly. Fleet or workplace charging often requires 10–30kW or larger systems, depending on the number of vehicles, charging times and daily usage patterns.
